What to text instead of ghosting (20 messages you can copy)

Ghosting skips one awkward minute, but that minute doesn’t disappear. It moves to the other person, who spends days rereading the chat. These 20 messages end things in two lines: warm, honest and final. Copy one, change a word so it sounds like you, and send it.

Why a short goodbye beats silence

Silence feels kinder because nobody has to hear “no”. In practice it leaves the other person guessing: did they say something wrong, did you get busy, should they follow up? A clear goodbye ends that loop for both of you, and it takes less time than the guessing does.

You don’t owe a long explanation, a debate or a second chance. You owe a clear signal. The messages below are short on purpose. None of them give a reason anyone can argue with, and none of them leave a door open that you don’t mean to leave open.

Ending the talking stage

You’ve been messaging for a while, maybe never met, and you know it isn’t going anywhere. From warm to brief:

  1. Hey, I’ve really enjoyed chatting, but I’m not feeling the spark I was hoping for. Wishing you a great week!
  2. I’d rather be upfront than just go quiet: I don’t think we’re a match. Thanks for the good conversation.
  3. I’ve realised I’m not in the right headspace for dating right now, so I’m going to step back. Take care!
  4. You seem great, but I don’t see this going anywhere romantic, and I didn’t want to leave you guessing.
  5. Thanks for the chats! I’m going to bow out here. Good luck out there.

After a first date: saying no to a second

A text is a normal, decent way to say no after one date. Send it within a day or two, so they aren’t left waiting for a follow-up.

  1. Thanks for last night, I had a nice time. I didn’t feel a romantic connection, though, so I won’t suggest a second date. Hope the rest of your week is great.
  2. I really enjoyed the ramen and the company. Honestly, I think we work better as a one-time plan than as a couple. Thanks for being so easy to talk to.
  3. I wanted to say this rather than disappear: I don’t think we’re a match. You were lovely company, and I hope you find someone great.
  4. Thanks for coming out! I’m not feeling it romantically, but I appreciated how relaxed it was.
  5. Last night was fun, and I’d rather be clear than vague: I don’t see a second date for us. Take care.

When to say it in person instead: after several dates, or if you’ll keep seeing each other anyway (same gym, same friends), a short call or a face-to-face word is kinder than a text.

When it was a friend meet, not a date

Friend plans don’t always click either, and you don’t have to pretend they did.

  1. That was fun, thanks for coming! I don’t think we’ll hang out regularly, but I’m glad we met.
  2. I enjoyed the coffee, but I don’t think we clicked as friends, and that’s okay. Thanks for saying yes to a stranger’s plan.
  3. Thanks for the board games! I don’t think I’ll suggest another one, but I hope you find your Friday crew.
  4. It was nice meeting you. I don’t feel we’re a great fit as friends, so I’ll leave it here. All the best!

After a friend plan you’d do again, just not soon

For when you liked them but can’t take on a new regular thing. These keep the door open without promising what you won’t do.

  1. That was fun! The next few weeks are packed, so I won’t make plans right now, but I’ll message you if a gig comes up that you’d like.
  2. Really enjoyed the market. This month is a lot, so no plans from me for a while. If you post another plan like that, I might just say I’m in.
  3. Thanks for today. I can’t commit to anything regular right now, but I’d be happy to do something like this again sometime. No pressure either way.

Cancelling or leaving a plan

The kindest cancellation is an early one. If you can’t go, say so as soon as you know.

  1. I’m really sorry, but I can’t make it tonight, and I didn’t want to leave you waiting. Hope you still get the ramen!
  2. I need to cancel our plan for Saturday. That’s on me, not you. I won’t suggest a new date right now, so please don’t keep the time free for me.
  3. Heads-up: I’m running about 20 minutes late. If that wrecks your evening, no hard feelings at all if you’d rather call it.

Running-late etiquette: text when you know you’ll be late, not once you already are. Give a real number (“10 minutes”, not “soon”). Past about 20 minutes, offer the other person an easy way out. On Wanna, the chat has quick replies for exactly this: “On my way” and “Running 10 min late”.

What not to say

If you’re the one getting ghosted

It’s mostly not about you. People get busy, juggle too many chats, lose their nerve, or never really meant to meet. When someone is talking to several people at once, dropping one conversation feels small to them, even when it isn’t small to you.

Why do I keep getting ghosted on dating apps? If it keeps happening, look at the pattern rather than at yourself. Long talking stages, vague plans and lots of parallel chats make ghosting more likely for everyone. Short chats that end in a specific plan get clearer answers, yes or no.

End kindly on Wanna

On Wanna, the polite goodbye is built in. In any chat, open the ⋯ menu and tap End kindly, pick a warm goodbye or write your own, and send it. The chat then closes for both of you, so nobody is left wondering. If a host picks someone else, everyone else gets a heads-up that the plan found its pair, and if a plan’s time passes without a pick, you get a heads-up too.

Really glad we talked! I don’t think we’re quite a match, but I hope you find a great plan.

💛 Ended kindly. Thanks for not ghosting

No app can promise everyone shows up. What it can do is make the kind option the easy one. Here’s how End kindly works.

Wanna is an iPhone app for meeting people through plans, not swipes. It’s launching soon, starting in Bangkok.

Free · No in-app purchases · iPhone with iOS 26 or later, not on Android yet · 18+

Questions people ask

Is it rude to ghost after one date?

It’s common, but a short text is kinder and takes thirty seconds. After one date, “Thanks, I had a nice time, but I don’t think we’re a match” is enough. You don’t need to give a reason.

Is unmatching without a message ghosting?

Before you’ve met or really talked, unmatching is just how the apps work. Once you’ve had a real conversation or made a plan, a one-line goodbye first is the kind version.

Can an app stop ghosting?

No app can promise it; people can always go quiet. What helps is fewer chats at once, plans with a set time and place, and a quick, built-in way to say goodbye, so being kind is as easy as disappearing.
